How to be the best boss you can be

Being the boss

Over the years, we have worked in partnership some amazing bosses.  Given this, we wanted to share our 5 top tips from them:

1) Think long term

Running a business means all the decisions come down to you and that can be challenging, we know we run one too! In order to provide a direction on how to move forward each year, creating an annual strategy for your business via a business plan is essential. This can help to break down business goals into manageable tasks to keep you on the right track.

2) Celebrate the wins

You know the drill, 101 things to do.  No time to rest!  From our experience, this is the opposite approach of the best bosses.  Celebrate the wins and keep it positive.  This is especially important when you have a team. We all need a pat on the back now and again.

3) Take time off

Being productive when you’re running on empty is impossible.  If you have a team, you know they are legally entitled to breaks.  Why are you different? Being on the go 24/7 creates burnout.  Getting to this stage is way more costly than getting that next piece of work complete!

4) Don’t let the business run you

The most flexible employers tend to get the best out of their employees, check out the stats! It’s easy to miss one of the perks of running your own business; you can make work fit around you. Be flexible with yourself and get the best out of you.

 5) Get the best tools for the right job

The best bosses know that they cannot do everything.  Technology can help you move forward each of these areas simultaneously, so investment in the three key areas of your business will help.

Think:

  • Marketing – MailChimp to keep in touch with your potential new customers.
  • Operations – Trello for project management, WhatsApp or Slack to keep in touch with the team.
  • Finance – Xero for keeping track of your numbers, Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) for tracking your purchases. We’re experts in using technology to make accounting easier and we’re always happy to advise.
