Companies House Identity Verification – Important Update

We have been monitoring this development for some time, and we have now received a number of enquiries from our clients regarding emails from Companies House.  This applies exclusively to company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSC’s).  It does not apply to self-assessment tax returns or sole traders.

These emails are genuine and part of a new legal requirement under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. Companies House are now beginning to contact all company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) to complete identity checks aimed at preventing the misuse of companies for illegal activities.

If you’ve received such an email, there’s no need to worry—it is legitimate.

We’ll be sending out further guidance soon on how to complete the identity verification process, once Companies House have developed their systems further. In the meantime, here are a few steps you can take to prepare:

1. Check Your PSC Information
   Visit Companies House, search for your company name, click on the “People” tab, and review the “Persons with Significant Control” section. Ensure all details are accurate, up to date, and that names are spelt correctly.  ttps://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk
2. Review All Your Companies
   If you’re involved with more than one company, repeat the above steps for each one. Make sure your personal details are consistent across all registrations (e.g., avoid using a full name in one and a shortened version in another).
3. Update Any Incorrect Information
   If you need to make changes, please let us know, and we can make the necessary changes for you.
